ARTIST BIO

Paul Lemmon's artwork has taken a new direction over the last few years and we are utterly mesmerised by his latest creations. His hypnotic paintings use fragmented film footage and online video news, then layered multiple times with tape before he starts to apply a kaleidoscope of colours. Removing the layers, the painting starts to be revealed. Paul says it is exciting “like taking a cake out of the oven to see how it has taken shape and formed”.

These “cyberscape landscapes” are a homage to digital video and its prevalence in everyday life. Although considered a vehicle of truth, coding caught at certain points allows for distortion and manipulation. This body of work explores the changing shape of the digital world and its influence on our own self-image and position in this technological era.

As well as raising important questions, Paul’s art is eye-catching. One will never tire of a Paul Lemmon painting, always leaving the observer to wonder whether through the jumbled digital jigsaw pieces one sees before one, there is in fact an underlying subject to be identified. This artist, who has had multiple solo shows, exhibited internationally and was winner of the RK Harrison National Open Art competition, is truly passionate about his latest body of work and frankly so are we.
