ARTIST BIO

Suzanne Winn is a landscape artist living in rural Hampshire, England. Central to her work is a desire to tap into the energy she feels when within that landscape. This energy brings a sense of movement and freedom, and a feeling of connection. Suzanne often revisits the same locations to paint, so she gets to know these places intimately. A core aim for this artist is to convey something of how it feels to be within these spaces, and her emotional responses to experiencing nature in this way.

The first stage in her artistic process is to go out and draw within the landscape, using charcoals and/or pastels. She uses charcoals to create tonal studies and pastels to lay down colour. Working rapidly, focusing on key shapes, tones and colours, Suzanne tries to capture the energy and feeling of the moment.

Back in the studio she paints in oils from her sketches and memory. Suzanne typically chooses a limited colour palette and mixes up lots of paint as she sets about planning her new piece. When painting, she likes to work quickly, instinctively and intuitively, focusing on conveying atmosphere and emotion.

Featured Artwork - ‘Spring Fields I’

Painted this time in May 2019, this painting is based on a view looking across fields to a wood which is very close to Suzanne’s home. The luscious greens of spring were abundant, the yellow of the rape flowers was just passing and the cow parsley was in full bloom. She applied the paint thickly with sweeping brush strokes with the aim of capturing something of how it felt to be immersed in the abundant energy and vitality of the spring landscape.
