ARTIST BIO

London artist Katharine Rowe paints mostly in oils, but works with pencil, charcoal and watercolours. She describes her work as colourist. Inspired by the subtle nuances amongst life’s colour palette, she will spend a considerable amount of time mixing her paint before starting on a new canvas. She aims to explore all the “true” colours in the subject before her. As inspiration, she refers to the great colourists of the 20th century: Matisse, Derain and Peploe to name a few.

Katharine is deeply inspired by her surroundings from the varied landscapes of London and beyond to portraits and still-lifes. More recently, she has been working on larger canvases. Through this new body of work on show here, she Introduces bigger brushes resulting in a slightly looser feel. Her aim with every painting is to 'paint light' - a lifetime quest she says. Her paintings have been widely exhibited and she featured in Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year 2020.
